New series: “Get Excited!” – Larry Crowne

One thing I really love to do in my spare time is browse through the new trailers and news for upcoming films, so I know what I need/want to see before it comes out somewhere (or nowhere). So, if and when I find something that really looks great to me, I’ll write a little bit about it so that others can get excited for it, just as I am.

This week, I hope to get you excited for: Larry Crowne.

Until he was downsized, affable, amiable Larry Crowne (Hanks) was a superstar team leader at the big-box company where he’s worked since his time in the Navy. Underwater on his mortgage and unclear on what to do with his suddenly free days, Larry heads to his local college to start over. There he becomes part of a colorful community of outcasts, also-rans and the overlooked all trying to find a better future for themselves…often moving around town in a herd of scooters. In his public-speaking class, Larry develops an unexpected crush on his teacher Mercedes Tainot (Roberts), who has lost as much passion for teaching as she has for her husband. The simple guy who has every reason to think his life has stalled will come to learn an unexpected lesson: when you think everything worth having has passed you by, you just might discover your reason to live. Written by Universal Pictures

So, what are we getting here?

Well, it is a Tom Hanks led film, the first live action film he’s acted in since 2009’s Angels & Demons. But want to know what else? Tom Hanks is also directing this film, his first film direction since 1996’s That Thing You Do. And even more, he wrote this movie, the first movie he’s written since That Thing You Do again (He has directed and written for Band of Brothers in between as well). I would love to see what he can do now in the writing and directing category, since he will likely be doing a lot more of those two as opposed to acting. At least, that’s what most actors seem to do as age catches up with them.

The story and additional cast seem to be pretty interesting as well, but the previously stated thoughts are what will make me Get Excited!
